When did you begin your bodybuilding journey?
I wanted to make the football team, and so I started training to put muscle on. With that I met a man named Mark, bodybuilding was his whole life, and he took me under his wing. I started training at Metroflex Arlington with him, where I eventually got to meet Brian Dobson and Ronnie Coleman. I began competing in 1991. AAU Mr. Texas – and I took the overall winner in the teenage division
What motivates you to continue pursuing bodybuilding?
I won Teenage Nationals and AAU Mr. America in 1993. I was the first to ever win both titles! That Monday, driving into Metroflex Arlington I planned my whole life in my head. I grew up in poverty, and my plan was to set short term and long-term goals, to get myself and my family out of that. Bodybuilding was my way out! I was motivated to buy my mom a car, and a house, and not struggle. I did achieve that!
What interests or hobbies do you have outside of bodybuilding?
Spending time with my family, Trish, Faith and Morgan. I love to hunt, fish, shoot guns, and compete in horse cutting. I run multiple shows during the year, so I am still very heavily involved in the competitive world. Lastly, WICKED CUTZ, my beef jerky company.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Keep your circle TIGHT. When you’re at the world level of anything, everyone will be your friend, until they’re not
