West Coast Update With Eric Broser - Mark "Superman" Durando
By Eric Broser
Several months ago I introduced my “West Coast Update” column to the amazing GASP community with a feature on top NPC Classic Physique competitor, Mark Durando. We had such good feedback on the piece that I wanted to bring him back again to let everyone know how his prep has progressed during this very crazy year! Additionally, I wanted to talk about the truly wonderful charity work that Mark does in his spare time when not working as a trainer and chiseling away at his constantly improving physique. As Mark’s coach for the last four years I cannot express enough just how proud of him I am.
Eric: At this time, you are 8 weeks out from the West Coast Classic. How are you feeling about where your physique is at this point?
Mark: I am in absolute AWE and totally WOWED by how much my body has changed during this long prep season. Not only am I bigger and more conditioned than ever before, but with your unique training techniques I have also improved my overall shape, symmetry and proportions. I am really beginning to feel like a formidable classic competitor.
Eric: This has been a tough year to prep and stay focused. How have you managed to stay on track?
Mark: This year has been difficult without a doubt, but I was able to stay on track by having some equipment at home and we just did what we could with that until the gyms reopened. And with having you as my coach, and constantly in my corner, I knew I had to keep pushing no matter what the circumstances. As much as I do not want to disappoint myself, I also feel that I absolutely cannot disappoint my coach!
Eric: Are you planning on another show after the WCC?
Mark: Yes, as you and I discussed, the plan is to take just to take a couple of days off after the West Coast and then immediately begin prep again for the NPC USA this December. However, instead of entering the bodybuilding division I am going to pursue classic physique. 2020 is the year I want to establish myself as a true threat in the NPC.
Eric: So, I want to talk a little bit about your charity work and work with children. You have become rather well known as "Superman" Mark Durando, which is cool. As well, you started a business called "Heroes for Hire." How did this whole thing come about? What are your goals in the future for this venture?
Mark: I started ”Hire A HERO So-Cal” three years ago with my good friend Larrisa Scott (who at one point portrayed the “Supergirl” character) as my business partner. We decided, after performing at a few events together, to form our own HERO business for charity because we both love kids and enjoy giving back. I took over the entire company when she moved to Arizona to start a new chapter in her life and to pursue her education. I want my company to continue to grow as I bring on more DC/Marvel fans of the world of heroes to part take with me. In the near future I want to begin to do live shows (short skits) for the children, especially those in that are in the hospitals.
Eric: Well my friend, that is simply awesome. You are not only a great competitor and trainer, but also someone with a heart of gold. I must repeat - I am just so proud to be your coach.
